Tips to Help You Sit Less and Move More

With the days drawing in as we approach the shortest day and longest night, on the 21st December, it can be all too easy to hunker down and stay in the warm.

Or you’re sitting down too much at festive gatherings, or at your desk trying to get all your admin [or your accounts] done before shutting down for Christmas.

However, your hips need to move, so that they don’t get too stiff.

A good motto is to Sit Less, Move More.

Thumb stick by front doorWalking is always good – and at a good stride rather than a slow amble. There’s that saying – There’s no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing

So – wrap up warm, dig out your wellies, wear a hat and brave the elements! If the parks or woods or fields near you are too muddy, then stick to the pavements.

Or take a stick or staff to help keep you steady. Here’s a photo of my lovely thumb stick – it even includes a whistle, useful for blowing an SOS. Not that I have needed to.

Nordic walking poles can be useful too.

Also, loathe though I am to say it, shopping malls do provide dry walking.

And then there’s dancing – whether at a Christmas ‘Do’, or simply having a boogie around your own kitchen or living room.

Here’s a useful and simple exercise – stand up and squeeeeze your buttocks. This will help to open out the front of your hips, and is a good ‘anti-sitting’ exercise.

Until the next time, stay warm – and if you’d like to turn down the volume on your aches and pains, please text me on 07535 350 343. I have clinics in Baldock, SG7 and Bromley, BR1.
