When you come to me for treatment, you may have heard me talking about sending love to your body.
This can be hard when you are in pain.
And believe me, I understand pain – from the inside out:
more slipped discs than I care to remember; multiple fractures (spinal and pelvic); the pain of “cording” after my first operation for breast cancer; kidney stones etc, etc.
So yes, I know – it can be hard.
My mother who had arthritis in both knees, and in the end, replacements on both sides, used to refer to them as “those bloody knees!”.
When we’re in pain, we tend to think of the part that is suffering as being somehow separate from us, a cast-out, and yet at the same time the pain can sometimes be all-consuming.
If, however, you think of the different parts of your body as being like young children – which will be more comforting?
Being shouted and complained at, or being cherished and spoken to softly?
A clip around the ear, or a loving hug?
Next time you’re in pain, try this – think about sending supportive love to the part that hurts.
Maybe picture it as surrounded by light (rather than the darkness of rejection).
And if you can reach it, gently stroke it to calm and reassure it, and welcome it home.
This way of sending love to whichever part is hurting is part of our self-care and part of the healing process.
Do I practice what I preach? Mostly … !
Our body is a living loving whole, a complete unity. And when it’s working in unity, in harmony, when we can trust that it is there for us, then all is well in our world.
And that’s what I hope to do for You: to help your body – the wonderfully different parts of your body – work together in harmony, so that you can keep doing the things that bring you joy.
